Barbara Holmes was in shop ownership from the get-go, 19-years-old with her own store selling ladies clothing.
“It was down in Duke Street, next door to the Post Office,” she said. “I would make my own clothing and sell it out the front.”
Running it for seven years, she took on the mum life and took a break from retail while she raised her son and daughter.
“Fifteen years ago we opened Holmes and Co; it was across the road from where we are now for 12 years, and we moved to our new spot three years ago.”
Born in Bruntwood and raised on a farm, Barbara is a Waikato girl through-and-through.
“I love Cambridge with its horse industry and agriculture – it really appeals to me,” she said. “And the town is expanding, just growing like a mushroom.”
And it’s the interactions with people in store that make her really love her job.
“I enjoy all the people coming through,” she said. “The lifestyle is for me.”
Holmes & Co stock RM Williams, the iconic label very popular in Cambridge – especially the infamous RM Williams boots, holding quality and tradition since 1932.
